Aug 2012 Design of the Month – Mr and Mrs Marsden

Mr and Mrs Marsden’s Underwood Kitchen

This kitchen was designed by Oliver for Mr and Mrs Marsden, using bespoke solid wood furniture from Underwood.  A mix of rich walnut wood and hand painted wood was used to create this beautiful classic kitchen.

The wonderful textures and grains of the wood are highlighted from different angles in the kitchen, and beautiful curves have been incorporated to soften the feel and look of the rich wood.

Soft downlights work really well with the kitchen’s excellent natural lighting, gained from their recently built orangery.

The customer chose Bianco Antico granite, which features uniquely patterned markings, for the worktops.  The hob area has a tall granite splashback which becomes a feature in its own right, with glass cabinet doors on either side of the extractor, and those curves on the end of the run.  It creates an interesting mix of materials with the wood, glass, stainless steel and granite when put together.

The hand painted wood island is the focal point, with its soft country kitchen look.  A cookery book shelf in the middle, breaks up the run of doors and is softened with its curved top, and splash of colourful books and is framed by the same rich walnut.

The ovens (pictured at the head of the island) were built into an existing chimney breast with a combination of Mr and Mrs Marsden’s existing ovens and some additional new appliances.

The sink area reflects the rest of the kitchen, with a curved granite splashback and parallel light pelmet.  The sleek stainless steel handles and tap compliment the kitchen and are reflected in the stainless steel appliances throughout the kitchen.

The island breakfast bar is a great place for the family to sit and grab a quick bite to eat, and to make it a little bit more unusual -a different colour Antique Brown granite was used.  Mr and Mrs Marsden have accessorized with black and chrome barstools, as well as chrome coloured small appliances.

Sitting at the island gives the family a great view of their bright orangery, where we worked alongside Mr and Mrs Marsden’s builders to ensure the project ran smoothly and allowed the family to get the most out of their kitchen using clever design.

The overall effect of this kitchen is very warming and relaxing, a traditional style of kitchen which has been given the modern touch for the modern family.

Now the project is finished, Mr and Mrs Marsden can enjoy cooking, relaxing and entertaining in this beautiful part of their home.  Cake anyone?
